[SCALING BUG] Windows 10 / Intel HD Graphics 4600 - Impossible to get rid of 'Black Borders' problem - Stuck at 'Constrain proportions'

$
0
0

=== Device/Software information ===

32 GB DDR3L-1600 G-Skill RipJaws,

Intel Core i7-4710MQ

Intel HD Graphics 4600

Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M 4GB GDDR5

128 GB Samsung SSD (Boot)

1 TB Samsung Evo 850 (Games)

1 TB Hitachi HDD (Data)

Driver Version: 15.40.4.64.4256

OS Version: Windows 10 Educational

=== Problem Description ===

No matter what settings you choose for your display in Intel HD Graphics Control Panel -> Display -> Basic -> Scaling,

When you launch a fullscreen application the setting will be ignored and it will revert back to 'constrain propostions' when enabling fullscreen, then when you alt-tab to desktop it will go back to your selected mode, then you alt tab to game and it will go back to proportions setting again, making it impossible to get rid of the black borders.

The setting only is applicable in Windows 10 Desktop, doesn't work for fullscreen apps.

It worked good in Windows 8.1, I just upgraded from 8.1 to 10.

In windows 8.1 I could game on any resolution without black borders - a nice, full, filled screen.

I think I have the same issue as the sir here: Inter HD Graphics Scaling Games after Windows 10 upgrade

Please fix this ASAP or suggest steps to fix.

Problem does not happen without drivers (Driverless) -> Games run in full screen / fill screen mode at any resolution.

So I have had this problem with the driver for quite a while now and basically whilst the intel hd 4600 driver is enabled the non paged memory is at 4.1gb but if I disable the driver it goes back down to 40mb, so could someone help me solve this problem since I can't really play the games I want since my memory sits at around 86% before even launching a game. I have  8GB 1600mhz ram.

This update addresses several previously found issues and includes new features. Please see the Release Notes and excerpt below for details. As always, feedback is appreciated.

The 15.36.23.4251 has been posted to Intel Download Center at the following direct links to the drivers:

32bit -  https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25146

64 bit - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25143

This driver supports the following:

  • 5th Generation Intel® Core Processors with Intel HD graphics, Intel Iris™ graphics, Intel Iris™ Pro graphics and select Pentium®/ Celeron® Processors with Intel® HD graphics for Microsoft Windows* 8.1, Microsoft Windows* 8 and Microsoft Windows* 7 operating systems.
  • Intel® Core™ M with Intel HD graphics 5300 for Microsoft Windows* 8.1, Microsoft Windows* 8 and Microsoft Windows* 7 operating systems.
  • 4th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel HD graphics, Intel Iris™ graphics and Intel Iris Pro graphics and select Pentium®/ Celeron® Processors with Intel® HD graphics for Microsoft Windows* 8.1, Microsoft Windows* 8 and Microsoft Windows* 7 operating systems.

New Features in this release:
New driver support for the newly launched H-series, R-series, and S-series 5th Generation Intel Core processors.

Display Scaling Option is Now “Sticky” User Preference

Scaling support in control panel has been changed to improve user experience. Previously, the set of scaling options available to the user was tied to the currently selected resolution and any change to the resolution caused the user selected scaling option to be lost. In the new implementation, the user selected scaling option is orthogonal to the current resolution and expresses the user’s preference/intent for scaling behavior, regardless of the current resolution.  The driver will remember this scaling preference and apply it for future display mode sets performed either in the graphics control panel OR via OS control panel.

Forced Application Scaling

The control panel also offers a new “forced application scaling” option where the user selected scaling option above for desktop will also be applied for full screen applications (generally games or media players), overriding whatever scaling mode the application and/or DirectX runtime/Operating System specify.  This is intended to allow users to force “Stretch Full Screen” or “Maintain Aspect Ratio” scaling to address problems reported by users with games running in “Centered” scaling mode - particularly DirectX10 and 11 games and/or on Windows 8/8.1.  Centered mode gives a bad user experience when running games as significantly lower than native resolution (e.g. to improve frame rate) on displays with very high resolutions.

Intel has identified several root causes for this behavior:

  1. Some games request “Unspecified” scaling to the DirectX runtime upon full screen mode set. On Windows 8 and 8.1, for touch enabled systems, Windows converts this to “centered” scaling in the mode set call into the display driver.  Microsoft has acknowledged this issue (CSS case 115021712411905/MSBU bug 5500783); the forced scaling option provided in this driver is a workaround for this Win8/8.1 operating system issue.
  2. Several games explicitly request “Centered” scaling.  Intel has reached out to the game developers to educate them to request “Stretched” scaling instead and several games (such as Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare) have been patched to correct this behavior, but other applications may still have this issue.

In both cases, the new forced application scaling option provides a solution to allow the user to specify their preferred scaling mode.

This option is not enabled by default because it technically means that the graphics driver is not honoring operating system requests for mode sets and would cause WHCK test failures during driver certification.  However, Intel strongly recommends users set this option when playing games at non-native resolutions, especially on Windows 8/8.1, especially for DirectX10/11 games.

Dedicated Memory Reporting

The graphics driver now reports some amount of fictitious “dedicated” graphics memory to the operating system (128MB by default) to work around applications issues in a number of games.  These games incorrectly look for some amount of “dedicated” graphics memory because they weren’t coded with the unified memory architecture for processor graphics.

The amount reported can be modified or disabled if desired by changing the following registry value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel\GMM, create a REG_DWORD value named “DedicatedSegmentSize”.  The value is interpreted as number of MB to report (0-512MB).  A value of 0 disables reporting the dummy memory segment.  If the registry key/value is not found, the driver will report the default 128MB.

Please see the Release Notes for issues resolved with this release.

BSOD with GlideN64

Back on Windows 8.1, the new drivers caused major issues with GlideN64 as seen here:glitchy slow graphics in GlideN64 (moved from dev forum)

Now, it got a whole lot worse.

On Intel HD 4400, Dell Latitude E7440, I am getting a BSOD on GlideN64 (OpenGL only) plugin on project64.

Related page: https://github.com/gonetz/GLideN64/issues/512

Plugin download link: https://github.com/gonetz/GLideN64/releases/

Project64 download (careful with "special offers"): http://www.pj64-emu.com/downloads/project64/binaries/

Legal Homebrew ROM for testing purposes: Micro-64

Hope you can get it working and not crashing the system. The BSOD has been reported to Microsoft as well.

Issues creating custom resolution since Windows 10 (Timing Standard option missing)- Intel HD 5000 on Surface Pro 3

$

Hi all,

I have a Surface Pro 3 with Intel HD 5000 and a Dell P2715Q external 4K monitor. I have recently upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 (full release, not beta).

In order to use 4K resolution (3640x2160 @ 50Hz) in Windows 8.1, I previously had to install the stock Intel driver (overwriting the Microsoft provided driver for the Surface Pro 3) for the graphics card to allow me to access the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel and to create a Custom Resolution as per the instructions in this guide from the Dell forums:

A custom resolution is required to make this monitor work at 4k.

  1. Right-click on the desktop -> Graphics Properties (Intel)
  2. Display
  3. Click on "Display" by the back arrow and select "Custom Resolutions"
  4. Select Display : DELL P2715Q
  5. If the "Custom Resolutions List" is empty, add the following resolution:
  6. 3840 x 2160, 32 Bit, 50p Hz, Timing Standard CVT-RB
  • Go to the normal Windows Screen Resolution dialog (Right Click on Desktop -> Screen resolution)
  • Select the Dell monitor
  • Click "Advanced settings"
  • Go to the "Monitor Tab"
  • Uncheck "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display"
  • You should now be able to select the 50Hz 4k resolution and apply it.  Windows will remember these settings, so you shouldn't have to do this again.

This approach worked just fine in Windows 8. However since upgrading to Windows 10, I have lost the Custom Resolution (and also needed to reinstall the latest Intel HD 5000 Graphics driver Version: 15.40.4.64.4256 for Windows 10 to regain the Intel Graphics Control Panel).

Now when I launch the Intel Graphics Control Panel on Windows 10 and navigate to Custom Resolutions for the external Dell monitor, I only see the Width, Height, Refresh Rate and Underscan Percentage options. The option for Timing Standard is no longer visible (however the Help still suggests it should be there!). Without the Timing Standard option being changeable I cannot set a working custom resolution.

Trying to set 3640 x 2160 @ 50Hz results in the error "The custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity" as seen below. I believe this is occurring because I can no longer change the Timing Option from the default value (notice the absence of an option for this in the Windows 10 control panel version GUI)??

I look forward to receiving your thoughts. Please help me get my custom 4K resolution back!!

Today I've got the message from the windows 10 app gwx.exe my Graphic Media Accelerator 3600 Series version 8.14.8.1096 (Date 10/23/2013) does not fulfill the specifications to get the update to windows 10. My system is a Lenovo S110 with Windows 7 Starter Service Pack 1. I contacted already Lenovo support but they said I have to ask Microsoft. Microsoft said it is the manufacturer (Lenovo? Intel?) who has to provide the latest driver. Does someone also got this problem and does someone have any idea what to do?

Intel HD4600 Problem with resolution in Windows 10

Got a Toshiba Sattelite laptop with an Intel HD4600 integrated graphics card. Got a Dell U2711 on HDMI, worked like a charm in Windows 8/8.1. Need 2560x1440 resolution for the monitor, used PowerStrip to force the resolution in Windows 8, worked perfectly. Just upgraded to Windows 10, I can't get it to work with 2560x1440.

Any thoughts?

Test Driver for HDMI Display Detection Issues

In an ongoing effort to resolve HDMI display detection some users are experiencing, we are releasing a set of test drivers for Sandybridge, Ivybridge, Haswell, and Broadwell based graphics to gather feedback from the Intel Communities on resolving these issues. Some users have been able to resolve this issue by changing the display cable however, this may not solve the issue in all cases. These test drivers provide another option to address this issue.

These test drivers are exactly that, test drivers, and only for testing the HDMI display detection issues. Please be aware that these drivers should not be used on mission critical systems and that we recommend a restore point be created on your system before installing these test drivers.

These test drivers can be installed by extracting the zip file and running the setup.exe file or by using the "Have Disk" method to install.

According to the license agreement, these test drivers are provided "as is" and are not supported by Intel Technical Support or any other department at Intel.

Issues related or due to these drivers are not supported by Intel® Technical Support. However, we at Intel appreciate your feedback in this matter.  Please post all feedback to this thread.

Hello,
So recently I decided to update my graphics card drivers since I haven't done so in a while, I went through the process successfully and correctly updated my drivers without any issues.
However now I run into this issue whenever I try to play a game such as Left 4 Dead 2 on my PC, the game loads up fine but when I get into the game my screen freezes and then goes to black and comes back on and I get this message:

issue.PNG

My screen would then go to black and come back on two more times and then my PC would end up deadlocking on itself and freezing up. if anyone can help me out here I would be very appreciated!

Hi,

I'm using a Dell E5450 with i5-5300U. When connecting my notebook per HDMI, it displays an "Intel Display-Audio" device which seems to send audio data to the receiving device (green bars on the right indicate audio playback), but sound can be heard.

I'm using Windows 10 x64 with 10.18.15.4256 Drivers.

How can I make it work?

Windows 10 can't install the proper drivers automatically. Are there any I can download and try to install manually?

Surface Pro 3 HD 4400 I5 processor not producing 3840x2160@60Hz with displayport

This problem is similar to the one reported for the HD 5000 and the I7 in that it can only display 2560x1440@60Hz using the displayport and the default MS drivers or the Sasmsung drivers.  It appears to be specific to the Samsung UHD monitor U28D590D. The monitor and cable produced 3840x2160@60Hz using an AMD R9 280 video card on a Windows 7 system. The cable manufacturer tested some of their cables using a Surface Pro 3 and Panasonic monitor. They were successful in producing 3840x2160@60Hz. The Intel Info page reports that the monitor is capable of 3840x2160@60Hz. When trying to add that resolution to the Intel HD graphics control panel it reports that it does not have enough bandwidth. A displayport resolution of 3840x2160@30Hz was successfully added. A replacement Surface Pro 3 was dispatched by Microsoft and it suffers the same problem as the original. At least using the Intel drivers can produce the right resolution! Any thought on why the bandwidth issue is popping up?

.

As an update, the Intel Info page reports that the chipset (assumption) is capable of supporting up to 60Hz. The maximum refresh rate supported that we achieved was 3840x2160@50Hz using the CVT-RB timing standard . Power settings when plugged in set to Maximum performance. A rate of 55Hz was attempted but it produced a maximum bandwidth error!

If someone can find the detailed specifications of the HD controller we may be able to get to the bottom of this. At 24 bits/pixel the clock rate has to be greater, because of overhead, than 3840x2160x60x24/4 = 3Gbits/sec per each of the 4 displayport channels.
