Display issues on ThinkPad L540 internal display.

$

0

Recently I had to replace the LCD in my ThinkPad L540 laptop.  Since doing so, the display no longer works correctly under Windows.  Interestingly, it works just fine under Linux (using the latest upstream kernel with the standard DRM drivers), and for anything that either uses VESA or UEFI graphics.  Things work fine when I am using just an external display (although only when it's connected to the mini displayport, not the VGA output), and also when I'm using both if the external display has the same resolution and refresh rate as the internal one.  Things also work just fine when Windows is booted in safe mode and when I have the Intel graphics driver uninstalled (which is _not_ a solution, as my whole reason for running Windows at all is gaming).

I've tried multiple versions (both the current version, which worked fine prior to the hardware change, and ffive previous versions) of the Intel HD Graphics driver, and all of them see the same issue.  I don't know if it's related to this issue or not, but when I have an external display connected, I only see that display listed in device manager and the graphics settings, previously I would see both that and the internal display (as long as the lid was open).

The hardware itself is a single GPU system using just the integrated GPU (no switching/hybrid graphics), which reports as a HD 4600 series (the CPU is an i5-5310M).  I've thrown everything I can think of at it from Linux, and the GPU itself appears to be in perfect condition, which leads me to believe the issue is with the driver.  The new screen has identical timing characteristics to the old one (1920x1080@60Hz native resolution).  Prior to swapping the display, I had the driver on Windows configured correctly to display this, and clone screens when an external monitor is plugged in (and I think that's why it works with an external monitor plugged in).

Based on past experience with almost identical issues on Linux with other GPU's (multiple years ago now), I think that the driver isn't parsing the EDID properly, and as such can't figure out the actual resolution for the display.  Visually, it looks like the driver is writing frames at some low resolution (my guess would be either 640x480 or 800x600) into the GPU memory, while the GPU is expecting frames at 1920x1080 (the display's native resolution (or possibly the driver is writing frames at the right resolution, and the GPU is trying to do some sort of scaling trick with them).  I'm working on trying to get a VNC server running on Windows (I've only got 8.1 Home edition, so RDP isn't an option) to see if I can figure anything out from there, but until then I can't get a screenshot without a camera, which I don't have available.

If you connect an external monitor to my laptop computer VGA port, it works well and the colors are good. Only happens on own laptop monitor.

I have done downgrade to 8.1 and to install the drivers it works fine , and then I went back to format my laptop  and go to the Windows 10 and the problem reappears.

In attached the print-1 show the image between the external monitor and the monitor of my laptop computer. The above is the external monitor with accurate color, the lower the native Laptop with colors reversed.

Intel driver is completely broken (custom resolution)

$

I emailed Intel Customer Support Service and they refer me to this forum because the agent say it will have the correct exposure to intel engineering department. (request # 8001214860)

The problem is Intel Graphics driver for HD 4600 (and presumably others too) have a broken custom resolution for Built in LCD. No matter what setting you put into it, it will always custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity.

I tested it on many different laptop with eDP (embedded displayport) like Alienware 17, Asus G751JM, Asus Q551LN, Lenovo Y50-70, Razer Blade 14, MSI GT60 Dominator Pro, and Gigabyte P34 and they all say custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity.

To establish the fact that bandwidth is not the problem, I tried creating a custom resolution at native res (1920x1080) at 59Hz (default is 60Hz) and it says custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity. To test it further I downscale the resolution to 1600x900 @ 59Hz and it still gives the error so I conclude the problem is with the driver itself.

I tried the oldest and newest driver from the OEM and the one on Intel website and they are all broken.

The problem is NOT ISOLATED on a laptop model or a manufacturer but the Intel Graphics driver itself.

In fact if you verify the problem by testing it on ANY laptop that has an Intel graphics and try to create a custom resolution that is 1Hz less than native (like 59Hz) and it will give you the same error.

So why does it matter? Almost every single gaming laptop that is being released are NVIDIA Optimus Enabled (Hybrid Graphics where Intel Graphics is handling the display) and it prevents people from changing the refresh rate of the display. As an example the LCD panel found on Asus G751JM-BHI7T25 uses LG LP156WF4 SPL1 which is the exact same panel found on Asus G751JY that comes at 75Hz by default, but we cannot change the refresh rate due to broken Intel Custom Resolution even though the LCD panel itself is more than capable to handle it.

Refresh rate is a huge feature as evident on monitors getting released (like BenQ XL2430T, Asus ROG Swift, Acer Predator, etc...) and if you ask any gamer that has tried a high refresh rate monitor they will tell you how much big of a difference it is and because of this issue, any gaming laptop that has Hybrid graphics (Intel Graphics enabled) is a HUGE deal breaker.

Dragon Age Inquisition not running in full screen on Optimus laptops

$

Hello,

it is a fact that since Dragon Age Inquisition has been released in 2014, nobody with an Optimus Laptop with a mix of Intel Iris HD and Nvidia xx0m graphics card has been able to play this game in full screen.

A lot of words have been spent against Electronic Arts and Nvidia, there a couple of official threads on this issue in their respective communities, but nor EA nor Nvidia have ever replied.

A first suspect that the issue could reside in the Iris drivers was coming from the fact that desktop user has an option for scaling override in the Nvidia control panel, which solve the issue, while in laptop users the option is not present, because the scaling is of Intel card responsibility.

I finally had the confirmation that the issue resides in the intel driver when I removed it from Windows and made the Intel card running with a generic Windows driver and the game was finally running full screen.

In my case the problem appears starting from Windows 8 up to Windows 10TP 10049.

I have an Iris 4600 HD card together with a GTX980m

The driver is the latest: 15.36.18.64.4156

but the issue appears with any mix of Intel and Nvidia drivers.

It looks like the problem is not present in Windows 7.

Please Intel have a look into it, as it looks that scaling issues are not new in this forum and there are other cases reported.

Intel 4400 Graphics Won't Detect 3rd Monitor on DVI

$

Based on another thread I was reading this appears to be a common annoyance. About 4 months ago I built a new system with an ASUS B85 Vanguard motherboard and Intel I3 processor at its core. Originally I was just using an old Lenovo monitor I had, on VGA cable. A few weeks after that I installed a BenQ GW2255 monitor using a DP to VGA adapter to connect to the motherboard's DP port. No problems at all, and I've been using both monitors ever since.

Today I bought another BenQ GW2255 monitor to use as my 3rd screen, utilizing a new DVI cable, and I was expecting an easy install. Unfortunately the Intel driver refused to detect it.

Now if I uninstall the Intel Graphics driver the default Windows driver is able to use both the BenQ monitors, but not all three. And if I reinstall the Intel driver it picks it up perfectly. I can configure and use all three monitors as long as I don't power down the computer or let it sleep. If I do then the new monitor may blip the Windows logo briefly on startup, but then it turns off with a "No Signal" error. Tried getting Windows to auto-update the Intel driver but the same thing just happens again.

Now from reading the thread below, I found that if I disable/enable the driver in Device Manager it will restore functionality, but again only until the computer is restarted. It's a workaround but not one I want to live with for a few years.

Official Black-screen thread - We need your help!

Has there been any progress on these types of errors? I'm running Windows 8.1 64-bit with driver version 10.18.14.4170 at the moment.

Why is my Acer Iconia W510 with Intel GMA 3650 not suitable for Windows 10?

$

I`m faced with a situation that is really strange for me. More than 30 years ago I started my computer realtion with DOS,then MS-DOS, an dlater on all Windows versions. I never experienced more than easily unsolvable compatibility issues due to what I thought, I always used Intel processors and Intel chips on the several generations of mainboards  The lifetime period of my several laptop, notebook, and desktop computers was ~ 6-7 years.

2013 I bought an Acer Iconia W510 (convertible,Atom CPU,GMA3650)

After several weeks of accepting my computer as suitable for Windows 10 the upgrade tool now states that it is not ok for Windows 10 due to the graphic card .

[NB:  Acer considers the computer to be an tablet  with the result that warranty is only 1 year.

This is well done, because since beginnig of this year the touch panel has a defect and I can use the keyboard only :-(  ]

Can this be true? After 2 years only my PC cannot be upgraded to an modern OS version due to graphic compatibiltiy issues.

Is there a technical reason or is it simply too expensive to rewrite the current driver for Windows 10?

For future investments I will take this  and AMD also into account.

Best regards

Rainer

Intel has just launched a brand new Web page called Gameplay.intel.com which provides lab tested in-game optimizations to improve the experience on Intel Graphics. When you install a new game on an Intel Graphics-only system, the experience may not be as great as it could be. Specifically, you may be able to dial up the frame rate and details or even play a game you did not think possible. With the in-game optimizations, the gaming experience on Intel Graphics will be improved. It is Intel’s goal to improve opportunities for gamers to find optimizations to enable better gameplay.

We hope you enjoy it!
